What Dandruf does to you
Dandruff's Genes Sequenced
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - First, researchers grew enough fungus to give dandruff to 10 million people. Next, they sequenced its genes. Then they found out that not only does an icky fungus live on your head and cause dandruff-- but it could be having sex. On your head. Right now.
A team at Procter & Gamble Beauty said on Tuesday they had sequenced the genome of Malassezia globosa, a fungus that grows on the skin of between 50 percent and 90 percent of the population. It causes dandruff and a range of other skin conditions.
Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers said their study can shed light on ways to fight not only dandruff, but an infection that can threaten the lives of newborns.
"A complete genomic sequencing of a Malassezia genome opens tremendous opportunities for researchers to understand the interactions of fungi and humans," said Thomas Dawson, a scientist at P&G Beauty who led the study.
"It's amazing that the understanding of the genetic make-up of a microscopic organism can have broad implications ranging from human health to agricultural science."
The team at P&G Beauty, a subsidiary of the company that makes household products ranging from toilet tissue to shampoo, said M. globosa is capable of excreting more than 50 different enzymes that help digest and break down compounds in the hair and scalp.
"The M. globosa genome sequence also revealed the presence of mating-type genes, providing an indication that Malassezia may be capable of sex," they wrote in their report.
Other fungi can reproduce sexually, but this particular type had not been known to, Dawson's team said. This means it could find a way to evade dandruff shampoo.
They said dandruff can affect up to 90 percent of people, and that it has been known for more than 100 years that Malassezia can cause dandruff and eczema.
Malassezia fungi also cause systemic infections in newborns, and is related to some fungi that affect plants such as corn.
The fungus joins organisms ranging from yeast to rice to human beings that have had their genomes sequenced.
Dawson's team said they grew 10 liters (quarts) of the fungus, "equal to the amount of fungus that would be found on the heads of 10 million people," the company said.

Jewellery an Art from the Islands
In the smaller island nations, when you talk about jewellery that word will automatically conjure images of shells, seeds wooden beads and many other natural products such as ropes, fibres and woven leaves.....(coconut and pandanas)
These materials are collected cleaned and polished, after are strung in variation using different techniques that give a uniquely traditional style...in some areas, certain tribes have thier style that is different to other tribes, this way they can be distinguished as coming from that particular tribe........it is a mark of beauty and independence, to have the body adorned with traditional jewellery, on the head the neck the arms the navel and the ankles.
this practice has been passed from generation to generation, however with more and more exposure to the international western world, skills are enhanced and techniques increase with a touch of modernization the skills of the older people arts are being modified by the youth and the results are rather STUNNING!
In my next post I will be showcasing some of these so if your interested pls dont hesitate to subscribe or RSS here.
Your comments are most welcome

I love this Quote
You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. --- Mike Murdock
Are you afraid to get started? It may seem overwhelming but if you focus on simply daily actions the big goals take care of themselves

An interesting Conversation
An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.
He asks one of his new students to stand and.....
Prof: So you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.
Prof : Is God good?
Student: Sure.
Prof: Is God all-powerful?
Student : Yes.
Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him.
Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?
(Student is silent.)
Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Is Satan good?
Student : No.
Prof: Where does Satan come from?
Student: From...God...
Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.
Prof: So who created evil?
(Student does not answer.)
Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?
Student: Yes, sir.
Prof: So, who created them?
(Student has no answer.)
Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you.
Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student: Yes.
Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist.
What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.
Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Prof: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof: Yes.
Student: No sir. There isn't.
(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that.
There is no such thing as cold . Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat
We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy . Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it .
(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)
Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?
Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?
Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?
Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)
Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)
Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?
(The class breaks out into laughter.)
Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir.
With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)
Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.
Student: That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH . That is all that keeps things moving & alive.
NB: I believe you have enjoyed the conversation...and if so...you'll probably want your friends/colleagues to enjoy the same...won't you?....
this is a true story, and the
student was none other than.........

Simply Beautiful
I have often been asked ...dont you feel left behind?? living in Honiara?
I often look around and say.....nope...I just love the layed back and relaxing atmosphere...and all the smiling faces arount here...
The Western province is an essential stop. The combination of pristine lagoons, prime dive sites and lush forests have immense appeal to visitors. The lagoons are a visual delight from the air and the combination of dark greens, white strips and light and dark blues is breathtaking. Often colloquially called "The West" the Western Province which has now become the country's hub for tourism, was formerly the largest administrative area in the Solomons with it's people describing themselves as westerners.
Western Province boasts thelargest salt water lagoon in the world, Marovo Lagoon. Up to 16 resorts and eco-lodges are based there including the beautiful Uepi Island Resort.

Where do you get your ideas?
I have often been asked this question....sometimes one can get tongue tied if not used to this talking too much, however this is s very good sign, it shows that your making an impact and catching attention...it took me more than a year to get some recognition, and I learnt that interacting (networking) makes opportunity for new ideas to be born.....so get out there and stop sulking, because time will nat wait for you.....when you go out and you have in mind to learn something new in every way, you will be suprised to see how well your imagination will work...and slowly generate new ideas, for those of you who are new in the art world of designing it is always good to surf extensively and leave comments where appropriate...I found a very nice blog that had so many beautiful print patterns - printpattern.blogspot.com

Beauty by Sophia Loren
When we think about beauty we usually dwell on the mechanics - skin cream, lotions, hairdos and how to apply mascara. This is an important approach to beauty because, after all, most of us are always ready to learn some new tricks that will make us more attractive, and these techniques do work. Nonetheless what I propose to do is to give a different approach to beauty, one that will serve women of all ages and of different natural gifts. This approach to beauty begins not with the face or figure but with the mind. If you learn to use your mind as well as you can use a foundation, you will become more truely beautiful.
As teenagers most of us are enthralled with make-up and hair styles. this is a new world to us and a badge of our feminity, and we sspend hours at the mirror experimenting. But as time goes by we limit ourselves to a particular style in clothes and particular shade in lipstick and hairdo.....we became set in our ways.
I suggest that once the fervent explorations of our youth is past, it is time to take on a new look at beauty, for mature beauty is very different from youthful beauty. It demands a different approach.
Where youthful beauty is unconcious, mature beauty is knowing and sophisticated, it admits to effort and is richer and more complex.
Beauty is valuable, there is no doubt about that. We live in a world that prizes beauty and rewards those who are believed to be beautiful. This may be unfair until you come to understand what beauty really is and what part it plays in your life.
